Mental health awareness is growing in India, yet many people still hesitate to talk about it openly. This hesitation often comes from deeply rooted myths and misconceptions that shape how we think about mental well-being. Many individuals silently struggle because of common thoughts like:

“Log kya kahenge?”

“Yeh sab weak logon ke liye hota hai.”

“Mujhe itni bhi problem nahi hai.”

Let us understand these myths in a clear and practical way.

What is a Myth?

A myth is a widely held belief or idea that people accept as true, even though it may not be accurate or based on facts. Myths often develop over time through culture, traditions, or repeated social messages.

In the context of mental health, myths are misunderstandings that can prevent people from seeking help or fully understanding their emotions1.

Think of it like this:

Just because many people believe something does not make it true.
Facts are based on research and evidence, while myths are based on assumptions or incomplete understanding.

Some Common Myths

  • Myth 1: “Strong logon ko mental health problems nahi hoti”
This is a very common belief. In reality, anyone can struggle with mental health-no matter how strong, successful, or independent they are.

Myth 2: “Bas positive socho, sab theek ho jayega”
Positive thinking helps, but it is not a solution for everything. Mental health issues often need deeper understanding and proper support.

Myth 3: “Therapy lena matlab problem bahut serious hai”
Therapy is not only for serious conditions. It can help with everyday stress, overthinking, and emotional confusion as well.

Myth 4: “Log kya kahenge isliye chup rehna better hai”
Staying silent to avoid judgment can increase emotional pressure. Speaking up is often the first step toward feeling better.

Myth 5: “Time ke saath sab theek ho jata hai”
Time helps, but not always on its own. Some problems need active effort, understanding, and support to improve.

Myth 6: “Mental health problems sirf adults ko hoti hain”
Children and young adults also experience stress, anxiety, and emotional struggles. It is not limited to any one age group.

Myth 7: “Agar tum busy rahoge toh depression nahi hoga”
Staying busy can distract you temporarily, but it does not address the root cause of emotional struggles.

Myth 8: “Doston se baat karna enough hai, professional ki zarurat nahi”
Friends are important, but they may not always have the tools to help deeply. Professionals provide structured and unbiased support.

Myth 9: “Mental health issues matlab pagalpan”
This is one of the most harmful myths. Mental health issues are common and treatable-they do not define a person.

Myth 10: “Mujhe itni bhi problem nahi hai, main manage kar lunga”
Many people ignore their struggles thinking they are “not serious enough.” But early help can prevent bigger issues later.

Can we break the Myths?

yes ,

  • Talk openly
  • Share correct information
  • Listen without judging
  • Encourage help
  • Be mindful of language

Personal insight :
While working on this topic, I noticed that even I sometimes ignore my own stress or think “it’s not a big deal.” There are moments when opening up feels uncomfortable or unnecessary. But I’ve realized that when I do talk about it even in small ways it actually helps. It made me understand that mental health myths don’t just exist in society, they exist in our daily thinking. And breaking them starts with being honest with ourselves first.

Because sometimes, being heard is where healing begins.
